The four candles represent the four weeks of Advent. Three candles are purple and one is rose. The purple candles in particular symbolize the prayer, penance, and preparatory sacrifices and goods works undertaken at this time. The rose candle is lit on the third Sunday, Gaudete Sunday, when the priest also wears rose vestments at Mass; Gaudete Sunday is the Sunday of rejoicing, because the faithful have arrived at the midpoint of Advent, when their preparation is now half over and they are close to Christmas.
The progressive lighting of the candles symbolizes the expectation and hope surrounding our Lord’s first coming into the world and the anticipation of his second coming to judge the living and the dead.
November & December Months of Gratitude & Commitment ( Stewardship)
Happy New Year! As we begin a new liturgical year with the season of Advent, let us renew our commitment to our beloved Parish of St. James by taking our Stewardship commitment form in the altar during the offertory period, a gesture of our YES! to God to give thanks, promote and practice the culture of Stewardship.
During these three weekends of stewardship renewal of commitment, I do believe that we took some time as individuals, family and parish to reflect this question: Lord, what do You want me to do with all the gifts You have given me?
As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God's varied grace. (1 Peter 4:10) God promises us that He will always give us all that we need. I believe that is true for us as individuals and as a parish. Our parish has great needs. We need more people to be involved in our St. James ministries. We need financial support. I am confident that God will give our parish what we need through you. Please ask God what He is calling you to do to build up our parish of St. James.
I sincerely THANK YOU St. James parishioners for your generosity, love and commitment that you are doing in our parish. Let us pray and support each other by making our commitment during this time of stewardship renewal. Commit your work to the Lord, and your plans will be established. (Proverbs 16:3) God bless us!
